In Canada, everyone has the constitutional right to be tried within a reasonable amount of time, pursuant to section 11(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

If you elect for your trial to proceed in Provincial Court, the trial must conclude within 18 months of the date that the charge was sworn against the accused. This is often different from the offence date.

If your trial proceeds in Supreme Court, the trial must conclude within a maximum of 30 months.

If your trial does not conclude within 18 or 30 months, depending on your charges, there is potential for a Charter application.
